A rising star

Ruquyya Vankad at Barts Health Heroes

Last year, we received multiple nominations for Ruquyya Vankad, a dedicated chaplain at Whipps Cross Hospital, who has made a significant impact across our hospitals.

Her colleagues and the families she supports have shared some incredibly heartfelt stories that highlight her exceptional contributions. Ruquyya's commitment and compassion earned her the prestigious 'Rising Star' award.

"I can't express how much Ruquyya helped during my dad's death. She made the process an ease for us in such a difficult time, hence why I have gone the extra mile to nominate her and can't thank her enough."

" R uquyya is like a breath of fresh air when she comes to help. Here on Intensive care, we have very sick patients, and they sometimes require Chaplaincy urgently. I normally phone her for emergencies to see patients and relatives who are struggling with especially bad news. She rushes in and can calm consultants, families and patients in a short time.”

Ruquyya was both surprised and humbled by the nomination and win.

“I am just an ordinary person trying to make a difference with a smile. I work hard to try and help patients, staff and families make sense of loss and bereavement in some of their most difficult times. I am always trying to turn a frown upside down.”

WeBelong wellbeing champions

Ward 5D wellbeing champions team at Barts Health Heroes

Another shining example of dedication and teamwork are the Ward 5D wellbeing champions, who won the WeBelong award last year.

"  This team has made such a difference in the overall wellbeing of the ward. Recently, they held our very first 'Multicultural Mondays' to bring staff together to celebrate the beauty of our diversity. Everyone was invited to bring a dish from their cultural background to share. It was beautiful to see people from different backgrounds and roles come together, chat, laugh, and enjoy each other's company. This is a perfect example of what working in St Barts Ward 5D is all about!”
