Relocation of the Whipps Cross HIV service to Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre

From Tuesday 8 May 2018, HIV services currently provided at Whipps Cross Hospital will be moving to the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre in Stratford.

The address of Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre is: Olympic Park, 40 Liberty Bridge Rd, East Village, London E20 1AS.

The revised clinic times will be posted on this page in the near future. In the meantime please continue to attend Whipps Cross Hospital.

Why are changes being made?

We are creating a centre of excellence for sexual health services at the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre in Stratford. This means sexual health services will be available for longer hours and be better able to meet people’s needs for contraception and testing/treatment of sexually transmitted infection (STIs).

We want to make sure HIV services are provided in this new, fresh environment, in the same place as sexual health services as this brings benefits for our patients.

By having the services together, it means patients:

  • Can receive a diagnosis and treatment for any concurrent sexually transmitted infections where necessary
  • Can have better access to information and initiatives around prevention e.g. the PrEP trial to reduce HIV incidence amongst partners of HIV positive patients who are not on fully suppressive HIV therapy
  • Will see clinicians who are dual trained therefore able to work across both sexual health and HIV

What about HIV services in Newham?

The HIV service at Newham Hospital will continue to run as it is for the time being, including the provision of sexual health screens for asymptomatic patients. From March 2018, symptomatic sexual health patients can be seen at the centres of excellence located at SLG or the Royal London Hospital.

We are continuing to explore if there is sufficient space at SLG to also allow for the relocation of the Newham HIV services at SLG.

Involving patients

We’ve met with the HIV patient forum at Whipps Cross Hospital and are very grateful for their input into making this move a success. A member of the Whipps Cross HIV patient forum attends our fortnightly mobilisation meetings, and their input is proving crucial in ensuring a smooth transfer of the service.

How to find out more
