Our pharmacy services

Inpatient dispensaries

There are pharmacy inpatient dispensaries at our four hospitals providing a 7-day-a-week inpatient service. This is where we dispense medicines to patients for use on the wards and to take home (TTA) when they are discharged from hospital.

Outpatient pharmacy service

We are working in partnership with Rowlands Pharmacy to provide an outpatient pharmacy service offering safe, high-quality, and person-centred care. This service is provided Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Rowlands Pharmacy is committed to supporting us in providing exceptional patient care and have a team of expert pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who will be available to dispense medicines and share their professional advice with you.

The Rowlands Pharmacy offers a range of services, including:

  • The dispensing of Barts Health outpatient prescriptions
  • Pharmacy advice regarding medicines
  • A wide range of over-the-counter medicines

Please note Rowlands Pharmacies are only able to dispense Barts Health NHS Trust prescriptions. For all other prescription types, including green FP10 prescriptions, please liaise with your community pharmacy to obtain supplies.

Clinical services

The pharmacy team cares for patients, whether admitted as an emergency or for planned treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery.

We look after everyone (babies, children, adults and the elderly) in areas right across the hospital, including A&E, wards and critical care units where the very sickest patients are cared for. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians work alongside doctors and nurses to ensure medicine choices meet the needs of patients and are used safely. The team also run some outpatient clinics, directly caring for patients and prescribing medicines.

Formulary

All medicines used within the Trust are included in the medicines formulary. We are working with other trusts and GP practices across north-east London to promote patients access to medicines.

Medicines information

The Barts Health NHS Trust Medicines Information Service support the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines through the provision of evidence‐based information and advice. Our focus is on supporting individual patients with their medicines.

Medicines helpline

If you have any questions about medicines you've received from us, you can contact our free and confidential medicines helpline, run by our team of specially trained, experienced pharmacists.

Please call our helpline on 020 8535 6971, available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

We're happy to take questions from a relative or carer of yours, but we can't answer questions if you haven't been treated at our hospital. We can only answer questions that relate to medicines that you've received from our hospital.

Some examples of questions that you might want to ask are:

  • When and how should I take my medicine?
  • Can I take other medicines at the same time?
  • Are there any possible side effects?

Please note that this medicines helpline is for Barts Health NHS Trust patients only and is not an NHS-wide service. If you are not a Barts Health NHS patient, then please get in touch with your local hospital, GP, community pharmacy for advice.

Technical services

Our team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other skilled operators have responsibility for the aseptic preparation of medicines. Such medicines include intravenous nutritional feeds, chemotherapy and various others. Technical services are also supported by the Quality Assurance team (QA). QA monitors, tests and controls the clean environment.

Other pharmacy services include:

  • Homecare medicines service
  • Medicine safety and governance
  • Medicines procurement and distribution
  • Radiopharmacy
  • Formulary and commission
  • Education and training
  • Clinical trials

You and your medicines

Bringing your medicines into the hospital

It is important for the team looking after you to know about all the medicines that you're taking. This is so they can make sure you're given the right medicines in hospital.

Questions about your medicines during your inpatient stay

Most wards have a pharmacy team that visits every day. They can answer any questions or worries you have about your medicines.

If you would like to speak to a pharmacist, you can talk to them when they are on the ward

Medicines when you leave the hospital

When you leave hospital, you'll be given the following:

  • any new medicines, such as antibiotics or painkillers
  • any medicines that have changed (for example, if the amount you take has increased)
  • a replacement of your own medicines; if these have been used up in hospital and you have less than 14 days of treatment with you or at home,
  • you'll get a copy of your discharge letter, which will also be sent to your GP. This letter will list your medicines and any changes made during your hospital stay. Your GP will then be able to give you a prescription for the medicines you need going forward. Remember that your GP might need 48 hours to issue the prescription, and they might need to see you first. Please make sure you contact them in plenty of time before your medicines run out.

Unlicensed medicines

You may have been prescribed a medicine that is 'unlicensed'. This is not unusual if a clinician feels it is suitable for your condition.
