Services affected by heavy rainfall

A spokesperson for Barts Health NHS Trust said:
“Whilst we are no longer in a major incident, we continue to experience operational issues at Whipps Cross Hospital caused by the heavy rainfall on 25 July. We are working hard to restore services in the affected areas.
“A number of surgical procedures due to take place at Whipps Cross this week will be provided at other hospitals within the Barts Health group. Outpatient appointments will be held virtually or in alternative buildings, where possible. We are in touch with patients whose appointments are affected.
“We would like to thank patients for their understanding and remind the public to check our visiting arrangements before coming in. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.”
Background information
- On 29 July the decision was made to step down from a major incident. However, we are still experiencing operational pressures as we focus on restoring all our services back to normal.
- Our emergency services have been fully restored and our maternity unit remains open for walk-ins and the team are supporting patients with their appointments.
- The heavy rainfall on 25 July led to flooding in some areas of Whipps Cross Hospital causing damage to buildings, the electrical system and a loss of power.
- A major incident was called across the Trust and we moved around 100 inpatients from the affected wards, including to other hospitals within the Barts Health group.
- We have moved a number of planned surgeries that were due to take place this week to other hospitals within the Barts Health group. Our outpatients department remains closed and we are contacting patients to reschedule their appointments or offer a virtual appointment. We have still managed to carry out 80% of our outpatients appointments virtually or via satellite clinics located in other areas of the hospital unaffected by the incident.
- Newham Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital are fully operational after suffering some flooding on Sunday 25 July.
