Royal London Hospital paediatric nurse in the running to be ‘Nurse of the Year’

Becky Platt, a paediatric nurse at The Royal London Hospital has been shortlisted for the 2021 Nursing Times Awards ‘Nurse of The Year’.
The award recognises those individuals who stand out as truly exceptional and have gone above and beyond what is expected in their day-to-day role.
Becky has been a practising nurse for over 25 years and is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in the Paediatric Emergency Department.
Becky was shortlisted for her work as a leader, mentor and role-model for the medical and nursing teams alike.
This dual role serves to bring the whole ED team together, improving cohesion, social learning, performance and ultimately the care delivered to patients.
Her kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, clinical judgement, problem-solving skills and expert knowledge make her a core leader and team member.
Additionally, Becky is the Co-Lead for Skin Deep (a diversity project); on the senior management team for Don’t Forget The Bubbles (an educational community) and is heavily involved in global health through UK-Med.
Becky’s work in global health recently earned her a British Empire Medal. For UK-Med and the Nana Foundation, Becky has worked in Samoa in 2020 on the measles outbreak, Malawi in 2019 and in Bangladesh in 2017 on the diphtheria outbreak.
There will be an interview process involving Becky and the other shortlisted nominees in September before an eventual winner is announced in October 2021.
Becky said: “Being shortlisted for the nurse of the year award is a huge honour. I'm so grateful to my colleagues who nominated me - they make coming to work every day an absolute pleasure and I am always inspired by them. I am as passionate about being a nurse as I was 25 years ago and I love being in a job where I can make a difference every day”.
Becky was nominated by Tessa Davis, Paediatric ED Consultant at The Royal London Hospital said. Tessa says: “Becky is a role model for all of us in paediatrics and her being shortlisted for this award is so well deserved. Her contribution to nursing and paediatric education has been exceptional. I hope she wins!”
Barts Health NHS Trust was also up for two other awards. The Family Liaison Support Team at The Royal London Hospital was shortlisted for the 'Emergency and Critical Care' and 'Enhancing Patient Dignity' awards respectively.
North East London and Essex Trauma Network manager Hannah Kosuge was also shortlised in the 'Nurse Leader of the Year' category.
