Innovative ‘induction of labour’ sessions launched at Newham Hospital

induction of labour

From 9 August 2021, the maternity team at Newham Hospital will be offering a weekly ‘induction of labour’ drop-in session for expectant mothers due to give birth there.

The idea to hold the sessions came about after feedback from women who gave birth at the hospital during 2021 showed they often felt unprepared and apprehensive when it came to being induced.

The induction of labour process can vary in length from 1 day to 5 days and can be an anxious time for women and their families. These innovative new sessions aim to reduce this anxiety in expectant mothers, by informing them beforehand about the process.

They will give women an opportunity to find out what the process involves (how it’s done, how long it can last etc.), what to expect if it happens and offer advice on making arrangements with their medical team to make the process as comfortable as possible, so they feel better prepared should they be induced.

Data from June 2021 showed that more than 30% of women who gave birth at Newham Hospital were induced. Some of the feedback from these mothers following their experience of being induced shows the need for such sessions.

One mother explained: “I didn’t realise how little I knew about the induction process until it became my only option. I wish I had done more research!”. While another stated: “The most difficult thing for me was now realising quite how long the process would take.”

Ms Mehreen Mirza, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and labour ward lead for Newham Hospital, explained: "By holding these, weekly drop-in sessions, we hope to empower women with knowledge earlier, to help them achieve the best possible birth experience.”

Shona Solly, consultant midwife at Newham Hospital, added: “As we care for and support a diverse group of expectant mothers at Newham Hospital, we will also be looking to, where possible, explain the induction of labour process to women in their mother tongue. Opening up communication on this topic is vital for helping women feel confident about what to expect throughout their pregnancy and labour.”

The induction of labour virtual sessions will be held every Wednesday at 10am-11am on Zoom. The same basic information will be covered each week. To take part in a session, please email us.
