Courtyard gardens at Newham Hospital to become a tranquility garden
Courtyard gardens at Newham Hospital are set to be transformed into a tranquility garden in memory of those who died during the covid-19 pandemic.
The gardens will provide revitalised areas for retreat and a place of comfort for staff, patients and visitors.
Work to transform the outside spaces at Newham Hospital is due to start on Monday.
The project will involve refreshing existing planting and external features, removal of tired and obsolete furniture and planters, new planting to beds and planters, installation of new planters, trellis and outdoor furniture.
Memorial plaques will remember those we have lost.
The week-long project is being managed by Ground Control, a landscaping and maintenance services, as a way of expressing its thanks to all NHS staff caring for patients during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Billericay-based company will utilise its design and installation expertise to upgrade the external spaces for staff, patients and visitors, providing them with a retreat and a place of comfort.
Geraldine Cunningham, associate director of culture change, said: “We really look forward to receiving the update to our gardens at Newham Hospital so that in our recovery period, all colleagues will be able to enjoy some comfortable outside spaces. We have five hospital sites and they would all benefit from uplift so we really appreciate the donation from Ground Control."
Chris Bawtree, construction project manager at Ground Control said: “There’s never been a more important time to provide a peaceful retreat for front line workers, patients and their friends and family. This is a practical way of saying ‘thank you’ and showing our support for the amazing work undertaken by all NHS staff especially during the pandemic.”
Savills and Homebase have partnered with Ground Control on the project to contribute to the creation of the garden upgrades at Newham Hospital.
Plans are also in the pipeline to create similar spaces at the other hospital sites.
