Consultant Sujatha Thamban

We spoke to Sujatha, new Divisional Director for Women and Children's at Whipps Cross, about her career in the NHS, the inspiration for the new role and her vision for the department.

Hi Sujatha, can you tell us about your experience in the NHS and how long have you been working for the NHS and for Whipps?

I have been a consultant at Whipps Cross for the last 13 years in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I run the Perinatal Mental Health service and a specialist vulval service at the hospital.

I have been in the NHS since 2001, first as a trainee doctor and then as a consultant for two years at Queen's Hospital in Romford before moving to Whipps Cross.

What was your role before this new appointment?

Before this role, I was the Director of Medical Education across the site providing a holistic support for the postgraduate doctors, ensuring a supportive and high-quality training environment.

Why did you decide to come forward for this job? Was there a particular inspiration or motivation?

I wanted to take on this role after being inspired by some of my colleagues who shared their passion, great vision and leadership to enable Whipps Cross hospital as a facility which provides excellent care for women and children.

I have always been touched by the dedication and commitment of everyone who works within the division, and it will be my honour to work with them.

Any particular highlights from the past year or so?

One of the most challenging and rewarding moments was when I supported the doctors during the unprecedented Covid times ensuring that training was not compromised.

What’s your vision for the department, say in 3 years’ time?

My vision for the next few years is to focus on the division getting from good to outstanding in the CQC, reduce the backlog of patients who have been waiting due to the challenge of Covid and to build a workplace culture that supports wellbeing and productivity without losing focus on long-term and sustained growth.

On her appointment, our CEO Ralph Coulbeck said:

“Sujatha brings great experience and skills to the role from her previous position.”

He added:

“I also want to recognise the huge contribution that Jimi Odejinmi has made to the leadership of the division over the past four years, leading the division through a period of great challenge and overseeing significant improvements.”
