View Day event returns after pandemic pause

Open Day at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Patients and the public are invited to St Bartholomew's Hospital on Wednesday 11 May for our annual View Day celebrations.

The event, which dates back hundreds of years, will begin with activities in our iconic hospital square from 12pm-4pm.

Since 2020 View Day has taken place mostly online owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year - the 472nd on record - visitors will hear about our achievements during the Covid-19 pandemic, what’s happening across the hospital campus and how you can be a part of our 900th anniversary celebrations in 2023.

There will also be stalls, entertainment and guided tours at the heart of the country's oldest working hospital.

From 3pm, Barts Charity supporters are invited to tour St Bartholomew's Hospital, followed by a service in Barts the Great church.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital chief executive Professor Charles Knight OBE said: “After two tough years battling Covid, it is wonderful to invite the public back. View Day has always been about connecting the hospital to our community, and we are celebrating this unique relationship again today. To welcome people back on the eve of our 900th birthday makes it all the more special.”

Nickie Aiken, MP for Cities of London and Westminster, said: “I’m delighted to attend St Bartholomew’s first in-person View day since the start of the pandemic. It is an honour to meet and thank the hardworking staff who have worked tirelessly during the difficult Covid period. Barts plays a huge part within its community and I look forward to celebrating its 900th anniversary next year.”

About View Day

View Day has been part of the Barts calendar for nearly 500 years, and has possibly existed in some form since the hospital’s foundation in 1123.

Traditionally, View Day has two parts – sharing the work of the hospital with our local community and a more formal inspection of the hospital’s properties.

For the past two years, the unprecedented global efforts to stop Covid-19 meant that, for the first time, View Day took place online, but this year we’re pleased to once again be able to invite our local community back to hear about the amazing work of our teams.
