Could you be St Bartholomew’s new chief registrar?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated medical trainee at ST5 and above to become the new chief registrar at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, starting in August 2021.
The chief registrar role provides junior doctors with the chance to develop a wide range of skills in leadership and management, education and quality improvement.
The initiative has been developed by the Future Hospital Programme at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and has the support of Health Education England, English deans and the General Medical Council (GMC).
Uniquely, the post holder can continue in their clinical role for three days per week, with the remaining two days protected for leadership development and quality improvement project management. They will also participate in a bespoke leadership development programme delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) and the RCP’s education department.
Applications are welcomed from anyone working to ST5 level or above who is training in a medical specialty that includes general internal medicine, and who has full GMC registration and has attained the full MRCP diploma or equivalent.
Dr Yang Chen, chief registrar and cardiology ST5 (pictured), said: “Being chief registrar at St Bartholomew’s Hospital has been a real privilege and career highlight.
“The support from consultants, managers, senior leaders and fellow junior doctors has made this challenging role enjoyable and fulfilling, and it is inspiring that there are so many people within the trust who care about working collaboratively and making continual improvements.
“Aside from 50% protected time to develop ideas, focus on sustainable projects and receive mentoring from the senior team, the teaching days hosted by the Royal College of Physicians include high-quality curated resources and a chance to debrief with fellow chief registrars across the country.
“I would encourage any fellow specialty trainee who is interested in medical leadership and thinking about applying to go ahead and do so!"
This is a fixed-term role for a period of 12 months. Applications must be received by 5pm on Monday 29 March 2021. Shortlisted candidates will then be contacted regarding the date and format of subsequent interviews.
To apply for the chief registrar post, please send an expression of interest to director of medical education Dr Mark Westwood, who is also available for an informal chat about the role.
