Dr Samir Agrawal

Consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Dr Samir Agrawal is a consultant haematologist specialising in lymphoid malignancies, transplantation and infection management. He has degrees in Medicine and the Pharmacology of Neuroscience from Bristol University in 1988. He completed haematology training at St George’s and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists. 

He was awarded a “distinction of merit” for his PhD in lymphoma immunobiology from the University of Paris in 1999. Other awards include:

  • 2018 BMJ finalist: “Cancer Care Team of the Year”
  • 2017 Royal Society of Medicine runner-up “Telemedicine and eHealth Innovation”
  • 2007 NHS Health and Social Care, Innovative Technology Award: one of 3 finalists.
  • 2006 NHS Innovations new diagnostic test for leukaemias
  • 2005 Barts Trust-wide audit – winner for management of cancer chemotherapy induced anaemia 

Dr Agrawal has over 80 peer-reviewed articles and authored the ECIL6 international guidelines for the management of invasive fungal disease. He is a member of NHS committees for antimicrobial resistance and anti-fungal stewardship.

He speaks regularly at national and international conferences and is involved in education for infection management, particularly in low and middle-income countries.

He is involved in lymphoma and CLL trials. 

Dr Agrawal is also a medical advisor to the charity, CLLSupport, for patients with leukaemia, and was previously a Trustee.

He is the founder of the largest, annual European medical congress on fungal infections, which is now in its 16th year.

  • Infection lead, including auditing and improving patient care by early administration of antibiotics
  • Audit lead – improving clinical care and supporting trainees to perform, report and publish such research
  • In 2015, he started a “remote clinic” service for patients with lymphoma/leukaemia at Barts – long before this became essential during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Enthusiastic teacher – undergraduates, trainee doctors, students of MSc in Microbiology.
