Clinical Immunology

We provide a full consultant and specialist nurse-led service for the diagnosis and management of patients with Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) or Inborn Errors of Immunity, Secondary Immune Deficiencies (SID), Hereditary angioedema (HAE) and Urticaria. 

Our services can be accessed by inpatient and outpatient adults and inpatient children.

Our services

  • Diagnostic advice and support on interpretation of tests provided by the ESEL (East and South East London) pathology partnership.
  • Clinical advice and management of patients with suspected or established immune deficiency.
  • Clinical advice and management of patients with suspected or established immune dysregulatory disorders.
  • Clinical advice and management of patients with angioedema and refractory chronic spontaneous urticarial.
  • Long term follow-up of patients with congenital athymia including thymic transplant recipients.
  • Outpatient clinics in person and virtually for some patients.
  • Combined respiratory immunology clinics.
  • Combined gastroenterology immunology clinics.
  • Combined paediatric immunology clinics
  • Day care infusions for adults and children.
  • Inpatient care for adults and children.
  • Home therapy for immunoglobulin, C1 inhibitor, Icatibant, Berotrlastat, Lanadelumab and other therapies for acute infection including inhaled treatments.

Barts Health patients with allergic disorders are managed in a dedicated allergy clinic.

HIV patients are managed in GUM/HIV medicine clinic.

We are unable to accept referrals for MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome), there is currently no NHS commissioning for this disorder.

Why choose us

We are one of the largest centres for PID, with around 200 HAE patients and 300 patients receiving immunoglobulin replacement therapy. We are accredited in Primary Immunodeficiency Services (QPIDS) under Royal College of Physician accreditation scheme. We also have direct links with paediatric services at Barts Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

We are the largest HAE service in the country and the only NHS service with accreditation for Angioedema Centres of Reference and Excellence (ACARE), which allows us access to the international ACARE/UCARE global network.

Home therapy

We are able to provide home therapy services for all therapeutics within the speciality. In most cases this will mean your prescribed medicines are delivered directly to your home by a trusted homecare provider.

Research and clinical trials

We host many ongoing clinical trials at national and international levels.  These are mostly industry sponsored including rare disease consortium/NIHR and novel therapeutic trials.

We support leadership in clinical networks (HAE UK), patient organisations (PID UK).

Immunology laboratory

Our immunology laboratory provides a full consultant-led service for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases and allergic conditions. Our staff provide a 24 hour consultative service for clinical and laboratory enquiries.

Training

We are a recognised centre for training of both medical (Royal college of Pathologist -Immunology (RCPath, JRCPTB)) and non-medical healthcare professionals.

  • Joint Respiratory immunology clinic — second and fourth Tuesday of each month at St Bartholomew's Hospital
  • Joint Paediatric immunology/ Family clinic/ Transition clinic — second Tuesday of each month at The Royal London Hospital
  • Joint clinic with paediatric and adult immunologists, respiratory paediatricians and immunology paediatric clinical nurse specialist — HAE, urticaria, CSU clinic at The Royal London Hospital
  • Joint Virology immunology Clinic — fourth Thursday of the month at The Royal London Hospital

Infusion Unit: Grahame Hayton Unit

Opening times: 

  • Tue 09.00 – 17.00
  • Wed 12.00 – 17.00
  • Thurs 09.00 – 17.00

Treatment review, infusion training, test immunisation and routine blood monitoring are by appointment only, weekdays 09:00 — 17:00.

Inpatient Care

Patients with complications of PID may be admitted/transferred to The Royal London for clinical management by arrangement when required in conjunction with appropriate organ based specialty care.
