Supporting people with dyslexia

Firstly, I would like to show my appreciation and to say a big thanks to everyone who came to the dyslexia awareness week stalls across the sites and to the staff who supported me.

This is the third year that we have held the stalls and we always have good feedback.

This year, the feedback was very good, but there is more work to be done around dyslexia.

Some of the feedback that we recorded included:

  • Someone said to me that raising awareness about dyslexia shouldn’t be one week a year.
  • Some say me that they have no idea where to access support.
  • Some managers are saying it can be difficult to approach the staff with dyslexia sometimes.
  • Some are even worried about the financial side of things.
  • We signpost some staff for more information and support.

What we have now:

  • The dyslexia team has its own support email address.
  • We have Read&Write on the Trust website and it’s for all.
  • We have created the pathway flow for managers, staff and students, on the trust web.
  • We have five core members on the dyslexia team.
  • We have eight accredited dyslexia champions and we are looking forward to training more.
  • We have a slot on Mondays morning’s induction at Mile End.
  • We encourage staff to fill in BartsAbility passport.

What we intend to do around dyslexia awareness:

  • We would like to train more staff to be accredited champions.
  • We would like to have accredited dyslexia champions at all sites.
  • To reach everyone that needs support on time.
  • To encourage staff to declare it and
  • To make Barts Health dyslexia friendly.

Barts Health is committed:

We are committed to support staff with dyslexia, remove barriers and take away the stigma around dyslexia, so that we will be able to showcase dyslexia strength and our positive side.

Facts about people with dyslexia:

  • Dyslexia is not related to low intellect
  • Strong ability to see the big picture
  • Curious, creative and intuitive
  • Excellence in areas not dependent on reading
  • Highly aware of the environment
  • Have high concentration
