Four teams to feature at flagship health awards
A campaign to cut the risk of heart disease for NHS staff is among a number of Barts Health projects that have been shortlisted for the 2024 Health Service Journal Awards.
Based at the Heart Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the East London Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Group run free health checks in order to spot the signs of cardiovascular disease in our workforce.
Hundreds of checks have taken place to date, with colleagues given advice on how to reduce their risk.
The Elope team, which is made up of doctors, nurses and other professional groups, have now been shortlisted in the NHS Race Equality Award category.
Barts Health has four teams in the running for an award in total, including the BLISTER project which aims to reduce infections for patients who have an implantable electronic device.
An acronyn used to estimate the risk of infection within the first 12 months of a procedure, the BLISTER score provides a threshold for which patients should be provided with additional support.
The project is up for the Patient Safety prize.
Meanwhile a collaboration between researchers from The Royal London Hospital and Queen Mary University of London to prevent users of nitrous oxide from experiencing nerve damage through a new emergency pathway, is shortlisted in the Acute Sector Innovation of the Year category.
A study last year from QMUL found that young Asian men are overrepresented in those presenting to hospital for the neurological side effects from nitrous oxide use. The new pathway is based at The Royal London Hospital.
Finally, a nurse led service between the Barts Heart Centre and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, based at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, to provide the sedative Remimazolam for patients requiring treatment for an abnormal heart rhythm is in contention for the Medicines, Pharmacy & Prescribing Initiative of the Year gong.
Billed as the ‘standard for healthcare excellence’, the HSJ Awards will take place in London on Thursday 21 November.
