Barts Health staff recognised in 2022 New Year’s Honours

Barts Health staff have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Professor Ali Jawad, consultant rheumatologist, has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to healthcare, while Oyebanji (Banji) Adewumi, the former Associate Director of Inclusion at Barts Health has received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to the NHS and diversity. In addition, Professor Nick Lemoine has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to clinical research, particularly during Covid-19.

Ali has been recognised with an OBE for his work not only as a consultant in rheumatology, but also his incredible work in the field of medical education and training, both in the UK and globally. The former vice president (global) of Royal College of Physicians of London and the former medical director of the global office of the Royal College of Physicians London, Ali has worked to train and teach healthcare professionals around the world, so patients everywhere receive good care.

Banji has been recognised with an MBE for her fantastic work in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion and for driving this agenda forward so it’s at the heart of all we do at Barts Health. Her achievements in the role include establishing staff diversity networks across the trust, and establishing the award-winning career development programme for ethnic minority and female staff.

Nick has been recognised with a CBE for his brilliant work in the field of clinical research, in particular during the pandemic. As a clinical academic at Bart Health, the director of the Barts Cancer Institute and the national medical director for the clinical research network at the NIHR, Nick has been at the forefront of research for years, to the benefit of countless people in the UK and across the world.

Speaking on the awards, Dame Alwen Williams, group chief executive of Barts Health, said: “I am thrilled that the incredible hard work of Ali, Banji and Nick has been recognised with these honours. They have contributed immensely to their respective fields and importantly, have improved how we care for patients and staff at Barts Health. I speak for all their colleagues and the whole trust when I say well done and congratulations – we’re so proud.”
