Leadership

At Barts Health we have many outstanding, inspirational leaders working at all levels of the organisation. One of our key priorities is to identify, nurture and support the leadership capabilities and management behaviours needed to embed a culture of relentlessly improving, compassionate, patient-centred care throughout the Trust. 

To further develop leadership capability and capacity, the Trust offers a variety of development opportunities. These are available for all levels of leadership within the Trust, from managers and senior strategic leaders to emerging, new or aspiring leaders.

Our strategy

To enable the organisation to develop a leadership capability that will support our vision and objectives, Barts Health has devised a Leadership Development Strategy.

The key pillars of the strategy are:

  • Defining who our leaders are and what is expected of them
  • Improving how we recruit and induct our leaders
  • Offering a range of support and development opportunities for our leaders
  • Cultivating our ability to identify, nurture and utilise talent by developing a mature Talent Management Programme.

Leadership model

To help us develop outstanding leadership capability throughout the Trust, we have adopted the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model. This represents the standard for NHS leadership and has been designed to provide a consistent approach to development irrespective of discipline, role, function or seniority.

The model is people-centred and consistent with the Barts Health vision and values. It supports the Trust's commitment to developing engaging leaders who inspire their staff to consistently deliver the very best care to our patients.

A planned approach

By taking a deliberate and planned approach to developing our leadership capability, Barts Health will be better equipped to meet its current challenges and realise its ambition of changing lives for the better by transforming the health of our local community.

This approach is also aligned to the emergence of a more strategic approach to leadership development across the NHS.

The Organisational Development Team works in partnership with our Education Academy, our Service Transformation Team, and numerous national bodies, including The NHS Leadership Academy, to deliver the Trust's Leadership Development Strategy.
