The Royal London Archives

The archives of The London Hospital (now The Royal London Hospital) date back to 1740, although patient records are only complete from 1883. The archives hold records of numerous other hospitals, charities, training institutions and individuals and most of these are available for research.

Visiting the archives

The archives are open to researchers by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm. We are closed between Christmas and New Year, Easter and public holidays.

Please email rlharchives@bartshealth.nhs.uk or telephone 02074804823 to make an appointment. Visitors without an appointment will not be admitted to the searchroom.

The archives searchroom is in a separate location to the Royal London Hospital site.

Nearest underground stations are Tower Hill, Aldgate and Aldgate East. Tower Gateway DLR station and London Fenchurch Street are also close by.

Records are held of The Royal London Hospital, The London Chest Hospital, Mile End Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children and other hospitals in the Tower Hamlets and Newham area, together with records of The London Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital School of NursingRecords for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals are held on deposit.
